Traveling on a small airplane was very different from taking a regular flight, Ryan found out the next day. Although they returned to the same airport in Nairobi where they’d arrived, it was a different section of it altogether, and they all had to stand on a special pad on the floor which weighed them and their luggage. Seats were allocated on weight to balance the plane, but since there were only ten passenger seats, everyone effectively had both a window and aisle seat anyway.

The pilot himself led them out onto the tarmac, ordering them to walk on the yellow line and nowhere else as they followed him. They carried their soft-sided bags with them as well, although there was a crewman to load the luggage into the airplane.

All ten passengers lined up according to the numbers they’d been given and then the pilot allocated their seats balancing his craft, heavier people at the front, lighter ones at the back. Ryan wasn’t surprised to see that Preston was ahead of him in line. The man was a fraction taller than him and his shoulders were broader so it made sense he’d be a little heavier.

Ryan wished he’d been close enough to Austin to share the excitement of the journey, but he was several rows farther back. The older man had shrunk a little as he aged, and grown a little thinner as well. Ryan turned around and waved at him. Austin grinned and gave him a thumbs-up.

Because the plane was small it didn’t travel as fast as a bigger aircraft, but then it was only one hundred fifty-something miles to where they were going. The problem was that this was where the wild animals lived. It was their home and humans were food. Not that Ryan planned to be any lion’s lunch now or ever. He was happy to watch out his window and see the animals far below doing their thing while he was nice and safe inside metal walls.

The ground was sort of brownish from this distance, but he could see herds of animals moving around. It was certainly very different from flying over a city or even a country town. He noticed the plane was dropping lower to the ground, but hadn’t actually realized they were landing until they got so low the wheels hit the ground and they rolled along the dirt, stopping, turning around, and parking.

There were half a dozen open-topped Jeeps, a handful of people, and nothing else. No control tower, no staff, no airport, no crew, not even a man with a clipboard. Nothing.

The pilot climbed out, opened the door, and helped everyone jump down onto the dirt. Then he opened the luggage bay and a couple of the men from the Jeeps came across and called names. Ryan and Austin grabbed their bags and followed their guide to his truck. He slung the bags in the back and they climbed up into the backseat. Austin found the high step up into the Jeep a stretch, even leaning on his cane.
